In 1996, the Danish Institute of Animal Sciences established Rugballegaard as an organic research station at Research Centre Bygholm, Horsens. The research station is officially approved as an organic farm.

The aim of establishing the organic research station has been to provide the scientists with the possibility to carry out analytic and comprehensive research, partly focusing on the conditions of the various animal species (feeding, livestock houses, welfare, etc.), and partly on the interplay between animals and crops (feed supply, grazing systems, utilisation of manure, crop rotations, etc.). Finally, the aim has been to develop and demonstrate new techniques relevant to organic farming.

Several research projects were established in 1996 at Rugballegaard. The ones involved in the projects will mainly be scientists from the Danish Institute of Agricultural Sciences , but as far as is technically and financially possible, other institutions and organisations are also welcome to take part in the activities at Rugballegaard.
