| Production of beer from Danish malting barley grown withtout the use of pesticides

Aim The aim of the project was to investigate the possibilities for the cultivation of malting barley without the use of pesticides, including the possibilities of retaining the malting barley quality in relation to the demands of the brewing industry. There was to be made practical instructions of the cultivation which integrated the research results concerning varieties, cultivation and fertilisation in order to prevent loss of yield or quality caused by weeds, diseases or pests. There have been conducted experiments with mechanical weed control, varieties, harvest time, fertiliser level and placement and a series of experiments where all of these were integrated in cultivation systems. The yield from the experiments have been analysed for malting barley quality, and in some cases experimentally malted and brewed.The cultivation systems developed have been tested on a field scale. A guide to cultivation has been developed in the shape of a decision support system.
